About the Mongol horse

I read another amazing story about Mongolian horses.
As I read it, my eyes filled with tears, and I could see the magnificent Mongolian horses galloping through the hell of bullets and fire, their ears ringing.
In the early 90s, I and my freinds went to Germany for the first time. It was the first time I saw the Western world and I was in a culture shock.
And when I was about to return, a friend of mine bought an old Opel car for cheap.
At that time, Mongolians used to drive their old cars from Germany, drive through Poland and Belarus, and then load them onto Mongolian trains from Moscow.
When we crossed the border, we went through the Belarusian port of Grodno.
Then we continued on to the capital, Minsk. We found a cheap inn and rested. However, our car broke down and we went to a nearby repair shop to have it repaired. While I was waiting to see my car being repaired, a large “Kraz” came in and the driver got out and was interested in our car.
He was a big, burly man. It looked like the driver of a Kraz..at that time, Western cars were rare in Belarus.
Then this man came up to us and started talking. Hearing that we were from Mongolia, he was very interested and asked where we got off. Then he said, “-I have a conversation with you..” We showed him the otel.
In the evening, we arrived at the otel and talked to each other.
-Is it right that he showed the otel to a Russian?” He was a little suspicious. My Russian-speaking husband said,
-No, he doesn’t. He seems like a nice guy..”
He forgot about the conversation and was about to eat and get ready to rest when there was a knock on the door.
When I opened the door, gaint Russian man something in a cage,
“Can I come in?”
We said, “Come in.” When he came in, the man greeted me in a Russian manner, took out a bottle of vodka from his cage and a lot of food and drink, and began to spread it on the table.
Then he invited us to sit down at the table, opened the other one and poured us a glass. We thanked him and ate what he had prepared and ate it. There were many beautiful Russian foods.
Well, then he started talking.
– I was born in a village not far from Minsk. Our village is not very big, and it is not very rich, but it was a village… it was quite destroyed by the war, and life was on the poor side. When the war ended, I was a little boy. Ours was a very poor family. Once, at the village council, an announcement was made saying, “The horses that came from the war \from the front\ are being distributed to the people, so come and choose your horses!”
My father left. But trouble came, and he met some acquaintances on the way and got drunk. My father was a man who liked to drink, poor thing. Then, after sorting out some things, he went to the Village Council in the evening. All the horses that came there had been taken away by the people. Only one small black horse remained. It seems that the military commander who brought the horses was preparing to return back sorting out his accounts.
Then he looked at his father and said, “Well, you’ll just take this horse…” His father sighed and said, “Do you call this ugly, black thing a horse?…let’s stop.” But the other chief said, “This is a Mongolian horse.” “A horse that has reached Berlin… You won’t regret getting it..”
Dad thought about it, but he took the horse, thinking that if he went empty-handed, he would scold his mother. Since then, that Mongolian horse has become an honored member of our family.
Dad gave him the name “Mongol”. “Mongol” is very strong, and when spring plowing comes, he pulls the plow our field alone. When he plows our field in front, two Russian horses alternately plow, and he gets tired very easily.
But “Mongol” will finish this work alone, regardless of the task. He will also plow the fields of neighboring families for hire. Not knowing how to stop, my father plows the fields of families with him for hire and earns a lot of money. “Mongol” is so good at carrying loads that he can pull a cart full of rice like a cart full of hay.
It is a load that only two Russian horses can carry.
“Mongol” doesn’t like to be in the yard and will go out. His will not stay with other Russian horses.
You will not let anyone near you except my father. Only my father will ride him. He will not ride anyone on your back. My father would bet with the men of the village, “How long can you stay on the back of a “Mongol”?” There was no one who would stand firm. My father made a lot of money.
In the winter, he would go to the mountains. He did not need feed or oats. However, families spent a lot of money on feeding their Russian horses.
There were a lot of wolves in our area. Once, when my father went to the mountains to get his horse, a young wolf who had kicked “Mongol” in the brain was lying next to him.
Since then, “Mongol” has become very famous and has become a horse that people respect…
In winter, a wild animal, which has become a scythe, walks through the village like a scythe. People,
-Look “Mongol” going to .” they shouted. The children ran to see him.
My father loved his “Mongol” very much. Since he came, our life has changed and we have become a wealthy family.
My mother used to say, “This little black horse is a messenger from God sent to bless our lives…”
When my father was sick, he would say, “I should thank the people who raised such a horse. You children, please convey my gratitude to them..”
I left the village to study. My father saddled his “Mongol” and took him to the city on his own.
Many years passed, and I grew up and went to live in Minsk.
One day, I received a letter from my father. My “Mongol” had passed away. He eventually grew old and was living in a stable. My poor horse had died while standing in the stable. My father was very sad and drank a lot. And soon my father became a god. The poor thing who went after his “Mongol”… said the giant Russian man, and he fell silent.
He stood up, reached into his lap and took out an old photo. It was a picture of an old man with a small black horse. The man said: – This is the only photo left from my father. Well, I fulfilled my father’s will. I met you are and told him about his horse.
You seem to be a very brave, courageous people, even though you are small like our “Mongol”. You drive around in old cars from Germany… and he raised his glass and said:
– For the Mongolian horse… for the heroic people who raised it…”

Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako said;

“We were able to experience Mongolia’s rich history, culture and natural wonders first-hand,”

TOKYO, July 15, 2025 /Kyodo/. Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have described their visit to Mongolia as “unforgettable.” The visit, which is aimed at strengthening friendly relations between the two countries and paying tribute to war victims, ended on Sunday.

“We were able to experience Mongolia’s rich history, culture and natural wonders first-hand,” the Imperial Household Agency said in a statement, noting that the visit was the first state visit by a Japanese emperor to Mongolia.

During their eight-day visit, which marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako paid tribute to Japanese citizens who died in Mongolian prison camps after the war.

After the war, the Soviet military transferred about 14,000 of the approximately 575,000 Japanese soldiers imprisoned in Siberia to Mongolia. They were employed on infrastructure projects for about two years, and more than 1,700 are believed to have died.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako laid flowers and observed a minute of silence at a memorial complex set up by the Japanese government on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar on Tuesday. The event was the first time a Japanese emperor has paid tribute to Japanese citizens who died in internment camps.

The same day, Emperor Naruhito played the violin with the Mongolian Morin Khuur Ensemble at a dinner hosted by Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh and his wife Luvsandorji Bolortsetseg. Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako watched the opening ceremony of the Naadm, Mongolia’s largest annual festival, on Friday.

“During this visit, we have been able to gain a deeper understanding of the development of the friendly relations between our two countries, which have been steadily growing over the years,” the Emperor and Empress said, expressing their gratitude to the Mongolian government and people for their warm welcome.

Mongolia, nestled between China and Russia, established diplomatic relations with Japan in 1972. The two countries have maintained close ties since the landlocked country began its democratization and economic liberalization in 1990.

The 24 Best Places To Go in 2024

Mongolia has long been the destination for thrill-seeking adventure travelers – as participants in the wonderfully chaotic Mongol Rally will attest – but the country is expanding beyond that niche as its tourism board sets its sights on attracting one million tourists per year. In 2023, the country launched visa-free travel for a further 34 nationalities – bringing the total up to 61 – in a campaign that is set to run until 2025.

The launch of new luxury lodges, cultural tours, and the announcement of the country’s first-ever direct US flight, coming in 2024 to the $650-million Chinggis Khaan International Airport, further signal Mongolia’s tourism ambitions.

Following the success of the rugged but chic Three Camel Lodge, Mongolia’s luxury accommodation options are expanding with places such as Yeruu Lodge, which opened in 2023. Offbeat cultural experiences are one of the most compelling reasons to visit the country’s vast, rugged expanses, and local operator Breanna Wilson offers some of the best. After a successful season of horse trekking and the Naadam Festival – a colorful display of strength, horsemanship, and marksmanship – in 2023, Wilson is expanding her 2024 tours to include a digital nomad week, a women-only retreat in Orkhon Valley, and a three-day archery training session with Namnaa Academy, an organization that began reviving the ancient art of mounted archery in 2020. – Ali Wunderman
